Trade Name FAQ

What are the UAE trade name rules?
UAE trade names must: include a legal suffix matching your structure (LLC, FZ-LLC, FZE, etc.); not contain religious words, ruling family names, or names of countries/governments; not be offensive; be unique (not duplicate an existing name); follow proper Arabic/English format; and reflect or be neutral to the business activity.
How do I check if a UAE trade name is available?
For mainland Dubai, use the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) trade name search at det.gov.ae. Each free zone has its own portal โ€” IFZA, DMCC, JAFZA all have name reservation tools. Most free zones charge AED 200โ€“1,000 to reserve a name for 60โ€“90 days while you complete setup.
Can I change my UAE company name later?
Yes, but it requires a name change procedure with your licensing authority and typically costs AED 2,000โ€“5,000 plus updating your trade licence, MOA (mainland), and bank/government records. Most founders do enough name research upfront to avoid this.
Do I need both Arabic and English versions?
Mainland licences require an Arabic transliteration of your trade name on the trade licence and MOA. Free zones typically only require English. Some founders register both to ensure brand consistency. Translation/transliteration services start at AED 50โ€“200.
